Why You’ll Love This Smoky Seasoned Salt:
- Smoky & Flavorful—Smoked sea salt, along with garlic, onion, and pepper create a perfectly tasty and smoky blend for use during your next summer cookout.
- Versatile—Sprinkle it onto chicken, steaks, vegetables, seafood, and more!
- Easy to Make & Store—Just mix a handful of spices, and you’re done! This salt keeps well in a sealed jar or spice shaker, ready to add smoky flavor to any kind of grilled goods in seconds.
Outdoor grilling season, although very short around here, just wouldn’t be the same without this seasoned salt blend. It’s smoky, salty (obviously), and packed with savory flavor that goes well with just about everything grilled. Sprinkle it over burgers, steaks, chicken, seafood, and more. Toss with veggies before they hit the grill. Keep a jar handy and you’ll find yourself reaching for it all summer long!
An Important Note—The Salt Is Salty
It’s important to not that this is not “grill seasoning”, but rather a seasoned salt blend. The base is a large amount of salt (both Pink Himalayan and smoked), making up about 2/3 of the total blend. So, *spoiler alert*, this is very salty! You should use this seasoned salt as you would normal salt when seasoning grilled meats, seafood, and vegetables. It will add lovely smoky, salty, savory flavor—but you must use it in moderation so as to not oversalt your food.

Pink Himalayan salt: I use fine grain pink Himalayan salt for its mineral-rich flavor and subtle color. Plain table salt will work if that’s what you prefer.
Smoked Sea Salt: This is the key to this smoky seasoned salt! I love the flavor of the smoked salt from Gustus Vitae. However, the apple smoked salt from San Francisco Salt Co. is another great option that comes in larger quantities.
Black pepper: More specifically, I use finely ground black pepper.
Granulated onion: Adds a mellow, savory depth to this blend that enhances just about anything you sprinkle it on. Onion powder can also be used, but the texture will be slightly different.
Granulated garlic: Granulated garlic gives a stronger, slightly coarser hit of garlicky flavor compared to garlic powder. I prefer granulated for its texture and how it distributes in the blend, but garlic powder can be swapped in if that’s what you’ve got.
How to Make Seasoned Salt
1. Whisk all the seasonings in a small bowl.
Measure out the Pink Himalayan salt, smoked salt, black pepper, granulated onion, and granulated garlic and add to a small bowl. Whisk until well combined.
2. (Optional) Process about a third of the seasoned salt for a finer texture.
I like to process about a third of the seasoned salt in a Krups Coffee Grinder (designated for seasonings ONLY—do not use one that you actually grind coffee in for this) to break it down into a finer, powder-like texture. Then, I mix it back in with the rest of the seasoned salt.
Yield
This recipe yields a little over 9 tbsp, or a bit over half a cup. This is a good quantity to start off with—but if you find that you like it and live in a big grilling household (like ours), you might want to double the recipe.
Storage
Store the salt in an airtight container or glass jar—I use a Mason jar. There is no anti-caking agent in this homemade blend, so over time you might notice a bit of clumping. Simply stir it to break up any clumps.
Ways to Use This Seasoned Salt
This is one of the most used spice blends in our kitchen during the summer grilling season. It goes on just about everything—think steaks, chicken, seafood, ribs, vegetables, and more.
