25 Hobbies to Try in 2024 - New Hobbies to Try

As we enter this new year, maybe you’re thinking that you’d like to try something new. Here is a list of 25 hobbies that you can try in 2024, including some of my own favorites and a few I’d like to give a try in the future. Who knows- maybe one will stick and become your new favorite pastime!

1. Knitting

Knitting isn’t just for grandmas! Grab a pair of needles and try it out. You might be able to make something cute to use or wear.

I learned how to knit when I was a little kid, and even took knitting lessons for a while! One of my favorite yarns is Lily Sugar’n Cream cotton yarn. I think it’s perfect for simple projects, like dishcloths or totes. This pack on Amazon includes a bunch of fun pastel colors, or you can start with a larger cone of yarn on Amazon.

2. Crocheting

Again- not just for grandmas! You can create a lot of cute items with just a hook and some yarn.

While I love knitting, I do not know how to crochet (yet!). I have been looking at this super cute crochet kit on Amazon, which includes written instructions and video tutorials to help you crochet a little dog. It looks like a perfect beginner-friendly project.

3. Sewing

Maybe knitting and crocheting aren’t for you- consider sewing instead. You can obviously learn to sew by hand, or invest a bit in the hobby and purchase a sewing machine.

4. Quilting

If you enjoy sewing, maybe quilting would be up your alley. Not only can it be fun, but you can also create beautiful, unique pieces that you can actually use in your home.

5. Reading

Is there a better escape than a really, really good book? Whether you want to be entertained or learn something new, reading can be a fun and relaxing hobby.

If you’re looking for some reading inspo, check out my favorite books of 2023 or some beautiful classic editions of books

6. Journaling

I love journaling for so many reasons. It helps me reflect, capture memories, and de-stress. I love using discbound notebooks as journals, like this one by Talia (shop on Amazon). You can easily move pages around, insert dividers wherever you want them, and add more paper if you need it.

7. Scrapbooking

Not only is scrapbooking a great creative outlet, but it also helps capture memories to look back on later. To me, there’s something special about collecting pictures and other mementos in an actual book rather than an album on your phone.

If you want a truly blank slate for a scrapbook, check out this one on Amazon. I used it to make a graduation gift and it turned out so cute!

8. Painting

There are so many painting techniques to explore. Or use a “paint by numbers” for a bit more guidance to start off, like this gorgeous one on Amazon

Fun? Check. Easy? Check. Calming? Check. If you are a dog lover (like me!), check out this adult coloring book on Amazon.

10. Digital Art

Maybe you want a creative hobby that doesn’t involve craft supplies- try downloading an app like Procreate to start creating digital art. Still creative, but with less mess.

11. Gardening

Not only is this a fun and calming way to spend time, but you may just get some fruits and/or veggies out of it as well. There’s also something especially rewarding about making a dish out of something you grew yourself, like this zucchini cake.

12. Cooking

Learning to cook and/or trying new recipes can be such a fun hobby. Lately, it’s been soup season around here!

You can check out some of my favorite recipes by visiting the Happy To Be Here Kitchen

13. Baking

Like cooking, you will likely never run out of new things to try if you like baking. There are so many sweet and savory recipes to try for bakers of all different skill levels. If you’re just beginning your baking journey, check out the recipe for these super easy peanut butter cookies– you only need 5 ingredients!

14. Sourdough Starter

A loaf of sourdough bread with Greek Kalamata olives on a beautiful olive wood cutting board.

Try baking sourdough bread, like the loaf above, using your own starter. Having a sourdough starter (and keeping it alive!) is a hobby in and of itself. They require regular feeding, almost like a pet. You can start one by scratch or purchase a sourdough starter, like this one from Breadtopia on Amazon that I love.

Check out my sourdough gift guide for gift ideas for your favorite bread lover!

15. Puzzles

Start doing puzzles more regularly. It can be calming and a great alternative to scrolling on your phone. Plus, you could end up with a pretty piece of art if you glue your puzzle together after completing it!

16. Weight Lifting

If you’re looking for a more physical hobby, try weight lifting. There are plenty of beginner workouts and apps to help you start out.

17. Pilates

Take a class (if available in your area) or try out an at-home workout. I like following Pilates workouts on YouTube.

18. Walking/Running

As the popularity of the “hot girl walk” has increased, it seems that going for walks has become a hobby in and of itself. Of course, if you prefer a quicker pace, then run away!

A necessity for a good HGW- a cute water cup/bottle, of course. You can check out my favorite Stanley Cup alternative here.

19. Snowshoeing

If you live in a place with a lot of snow (like I do), then try out snowshoeing. It can be a great way to get outside during the winter months when you may be cooped up inside.

If snowshoeing is not your jam, try out another winter sport or activity, like snowboarding, skiing, or snow tubing.

20. Making Playlists

Some people may not consider this a hobby, but I think it 100% is. I love to create playlists for certain moods, events, and times in my life.

21. Pottery

Here’s another hobby that I would love to try someday, hopefully soon. I think it would be fun to make pieces that you could (hopefully) use or display, although that may be a little optimistic for a beginner!

22. Photography

Don’t have a camera? Start with your phone!

23. Stargazing

This is an easy hobby to start, as long as the sky is clear where you are. You can download an app to help you identify constellations, look for the Northern Lights, or combine photography and stargazing and learn how to take photos of the night sky with your iPhone.

24. Doing Makeup

Maybe makeup is not your thing or you just want to stick to your routine- that’s okay! But for those who like to experiment, trying out new products and looks can be a fun way to spend free time. You may even find a new favorite product, like these amazing ones I tried and loved in 2023.

25. Blogging

I can speak from experience on this one! Blogging (or vlogging, if video is more your jam) is such a fun and rewarding creative outlet. If the idea to start a blog has been lingering in the back of your mind- give it a try!

A little reminder about new hobbies:

For all my perfectionists out there, please remember that you can try new things and be completely horrible at them- and that’s okay! You don’t have to be amazing at something to have fun doing it.
